Regardless active implementation of digital technologies in our life, according to the data from All-Russian Center of Public Opinion Research in Russia about 80% of office employees daily use over 10 sheets of office paper. In the world annually is used over 115 bln sheets of paper.
If you want to keep your office equipment for a long time, choose paper of world known producers. It is produced under conditions of controlled production and meets all the necessary standards. Usually the main parameters of paper are shown on the packaging. Let’s examine a package of Snegurochka paper, produced by Mondi Syktyvkar, as an example. What do we see? 80 g/m², 500×A4, Laser/Inkjet/Fax/Copy and signs of FCS, Green Range and Ecolabel. We spoke about these signs in other articles, so now we’ll speak about technical characteristics. 80 g/m² – shows paper density, mass of 1 m² in grams. Standard density for office paper is from 80 to 95 g/m². It’s interesting that the most popular nowadays office paper of 80 g/m² was first used for copy machines by Xerox company. Today all equipment in Russia is set for this density, though in some other countries 75 g/m² is considered to be standard. If you want to use paper with higher density – make sure that technical characteristics of your equipment allow it, usually you can see on the machine the maximal index you can use on it.
А4 is a sheet format. Its size is 210×297 mm. Such formats for paper sheets appeared in XX century as a way to put in order numerous number of different paper formats produced by different mills in different countries. Relation of sheet width to its length in all standards is: 1 to square root from 2. If you fold such sheet in two you get its twice smaller copy. Thus, from sheet of paper А0 (841×1189 mm) you get 2 sheets of А1, 4 sheets of А2, 8 sheets of А3 and 16 sheets of А4.
Marking Laser/Inkjet/Fax/Copy means that this paper is good to use for laser and inkjet printing machines, faxes and copiers.
Important parameters that are not written on the package
In order to print lines of any thickness on paper without corruption the level of its roughness should be from 150 to 200 ml/min. This indicator producer measures as time during which air flow passes along the sheet. The higher it is the smoother paper will be.
Whiteness according to CIE standard developed by French Institute of Photometry (Comision Internationale de LEclairage) can exceed 100%. It means that paper sheet reflects more light than touches it, because it has optical whiteners that reflect part of UV-light back into visible spectrum. Whiteness according to ISO usually comprises 92–94%. The higher whiteness indicator is regardless the measurement system the better its surface reflects even and diffuse light. Of course, the whiter paper is, the more contrast and clear printouts you’ll get on it.
In Russia office paper is divided into classes. The cheapest variant that provides pretty high quality of printing is class C.
This paper has whiteness about 145 CIE, it is suitable for black and white copiers and printers with printing\copying velocity up to 35 pages per minute in regime of one side printing\copying. Such paper is not recommended for inkjet printers.
Office paper from class B has higher quality. Its whiteness is about 160 CIE and application field – black and white copiers and printers with printing\copying velocity up to 180 pages per minute in regime of two-sided printing\copying. It also provides acceptable quality of monochrome printing on inkjet printer.
If you want to get premium class printouts you need paper of class A with whiteness 165 CIE. It will suit black and white and color copiers, laser and inkjet printers with any printing velocities, except printing\copying of photos. Usually it is used for advertising materials and presentations.
Should you pay more?
The main criterion of office paper choice for many people is its price. The higher it is the better paper is. How not to spoil your office equipment and not to pay unnecessary money? Purchase of expensive paper should be reasonable. It’s better to pay a bit more for paper with high technical characteristics like dirtiness, ash-content and resilience to fluffing and prevent your machine from untimely breaks. Thus you will spend less than in case of repairs or necessity to buy new equipment, you will also save your nerves and get printed documents of good quality.
